ABOUT HACKATHON
The BPUT Hackathon is a competitive, collaborative event that invites students to solve real-world problems through innovative coding and software development. This guideline provides a structured approach for organizing and executing the hackathon, from registration to the final evaluation.
Registration Opening
- Timeline: Registration will open from 16th December 2024.
- Platform: A dedicated registration page on the official website of BPUT for Hackathon.

- Timeline: Registration closes on 19th December 2024.

Kick-off & Problem Statements
Opening Ceremony: On the first day i.e., 20th December 2024, a virtual or in-person kick-off event will be held. This will introduce the problem statements, event rules, judging criteria, and provide an overview of the event schedule.

TEAM FORMATION
Team Composition
- Team Size: Each team should consist of 3-6 participants.
- Team Requirements:
- Teams can be interdisciplinary (participants from different departments or years are encouraged).
- At least one member must be from a technical background (e.g., Computer Science, Electronics, etc.) and one or two member from management background.
- Teams must register together as a group, and cannot change members after registration closes.
Team Formation Deadline : Teams must finalize their members and submit their team details before the hackathon registration closing date.
MID-EVALUATION (Pre-qualification)
Mid-Evaluation Purpose
- Mid-evaluation serves as a checkpoint to track progress and provide teams with feedback on their work. It also ensures teams are on the right track and not straying off-topic.
- There shall be One virtual mid-evaluations before the Hackathon Day.
- The mid-evaluation will be done by the jury members nominated by BPUT within 1 to 2 weeks of registration. The tentative date for mid-evaluation will be 27th -28th December 2024.
- The teams who qualified in the mid-evaluation will be called for the Hackathon Day on 4th and 5th January 2025 to BPUT, Rourkela.
- Based on the mid-evaluation results at most five (05) teams for each problem statement will be called for the Hackathon Day.
Mid-Evaluation Criteria:
- Progress Check: Teams must demonstrate at least one working prototype, design model, codebase or proposal.
- Pitching: A short 10-minute pitch or demo where teams show their current progress online.
- Feedback: Mentors may provide feedback and suggestions for further improvement.
Evaluation Panel:
- The panel will consist of technical mentors, industry experts, and event organizers.
FINAL SUBMISSION AND EVALUATION CRITERIA
Final Submission
- Deadline: Final submissions must be submitted at least 2 hours before the event concludes.
- Format: Teams must submit their code, demo video (if applicable), and documentation (including project goals, architecture, and user manual).
- Submission Portal: All final materials must be uploaded to the designated platform by the deadline.
Final Presentation
- Pitching: Teams will have 10 minutes to present their final solution, followed by a 5-minute Q&A with the judges.
- Audience: Presentations will be held physically before the jury members.
Judging Criteria:
- Innovation (30%): Originality and creativity of the solution.
- Technical Complexity (25%): Difficulty of the technical solution and implementation.
- User Experience (20%): Design, usability, and user-centered focus of the product.
- Impact (15%): Potential social, environmental, or economic impact of the solution.
- Presentation (10%): Clarity of the pitch, communication of the solution, and responsiveness during Q&A.
Selection Criteria
Eligibility:
- All participants must be enrolled in BPUT, either as full-time students or research scholars.
- Teams must register within the given timeline.
Team Selection for Judging:
- Only teams that have met the minimum submission criteria (working prototype, code, and presentation) will be evaluated.
- Teams are evaluated based on progress at the mid-evaluation and final submission quality.
PRIZES AND REWARDS
- 1st Place: Cash prize (₹ 30,000/-), certificates, and internship opportunities (if applicable).
- 2nd Place: Cash prize (₹ 20,000/-) and certificates.
Rewards Distribution
- All winning teams will be recognized in an official award ceremony at the end of the event.
- Prizes may be given in the form of cash, gadgets, or sponsored rewards, depending on event partnerships.
CODE OF CONDUCT
- Respect: All participants must maintain respect for others, including teammates, judges, mentors, and fellow competitors.
- Original Work: Plagiarism or use of pre-built solutions without proper attribution will lead to disqualification.
- Professional Behavior: Harassment, inappropriate language, or behavior will not be tolerated.
- Mentorship: Participants are encouraged to seek mentorship but should avoid dependency on mentors during coding.
HACKATHON DAY
- The hackathon day typically involves a day filled with activities and events designed to inspire creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork.
- The duration of hackathon should be of 36-48 hours. There will be six slots of 6 hours each. There should be 6 technical sessions in between each slot.
- The Mentors and Technical guidance will be provided in between each block during the event.
- Briefings on activity/event/utility tools and resources will be done during the session.

Attention
- Participants will have an opportunity to network with industry professionals, mentors, and peers post-event.
- High-quality projects may be showcased on the BPUT website, social media channels, or presented in future tech events.
- At the end of the hackathon, an award ceremony will take place (either virtual or in-person).
- Prizes will be distributed and winners will be announced publicly.
- All participants will be sent a feedback form to evaluate their hackathon experience. Feedback will help improve future events.
